Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a rare tumor that arise from either the visceral or the parietal pleura. Although uncommon, malignant mesothelioma has assumed great importance in the past few yeas because of their increased incidence among persons with heavy exposure to asbestos There are different causes that determine malignant mesothelioma such as asbestos exposure, other mineral exposures ( zeolites, tremolite, talc ), radiation, collapsotherapy, Simian Virus, tobacco, chronic irritation and inflammation, imunoproliferative disorders, genetic susceptibility. But the principal cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Asbestos appealed to manufacturers and builders for a variety of reasons. It is strong yet flexible, and it will not burn. It conducts electricity poorly, but insulates effectively. It also resists corrosion. Asbestos may have been so widely used because few other available substances combine the same qualities. Asbestos was used in constructions, people constructed and renovated schools and other public buildings used asbestos and asbestos -containing materials extensively. Once inhaled, asbestos fibers can easily penetrate body tissues. They may be deposited and retained in the airways and lung tissue. Because asbestos fibers remain in the body, each exposure increases the likelihood of developing an asbestos-related disease. Asbestos related diseases may not appear until years after exposure. It is estimated that from 1940 through 1980 approximately 27,5 million workers were expose to asbestos in United States. Mesothelioma symptoms are: chest pain, dyspnea, pleural effusion, cough, weight loss, fever, dysphagia, pain in the chest and abdominal region, which is generally unresponsive to analgesics, muscle weakness and sensory loss. Mesothelioma treatments involves surgery or drugs. The persons that risk mesothelioma injuries are : people who were exposed to asbestos like: insulators, boilemakers, shipfitters, steel workers, maintenance workers, pipe fitters, brake mechanics.
